Banking While Already Abroad: Residence, Access and Backup Plans
Reviewed September 15, 2026. Use this guide when you are already traveling and need to solve an access problem. For a first application before departure, use the account-opening checklist.
Identify the actual constraint
“Need a new account” can mean several different problems. A card may have expired, your client may require a particular payment method, your residence may have changed, or your phone may no longer receive authentication messages. Write down the specific problem before starting another application.
| Problem | First action |
|---|---|
| Main card unavailable | Contact the issuer through its official support route and use your backup method if eligible |
| Client cannot use your receiving details | Confirm the currency and transfer method with both the client and provider |
| Moved to a new country | Ask the provider what address/residence updates or account changes are required |
| Lost authentication access | Follow the official recovery process; do not share security codes with third parties |
| Need a local account | Check local eligibility and the institution's document requirements |
Residence is not the same as travel location
Do not use a temporary accommodation address as proof of eligibility unless the institution explicitly accepts it for your circumstances. Check supported residence, account type, and required updates directly. Wise's feature checker and Revolut's residence guidance are starting points, not approval promises.
Check delivery before ordering
Find out where the issuer can send a card, how it handles replacement, and whether your planned address will remain available long enough. Ask whether any available digital alternative meets the specific need; a digital card does not necessarily solve cash access or every verification requirement.
Receiving an invoice is a separate decision
Confirm that your account permits the relevant business activity and payment method. Do not assume a personal account is suitable for all freelance or company income. Agree who pays transfer charges and retain invoice and payment records. Use our international payment workflow.
Build a backup before the next move
Keep a separately stored payment method and current support information. Check account access before changing devices or phone numbers. Allow time to resolve issues before rent, travel, or other important payments are due.
Review banking options by use case once you know the gap you are trying to fill. Compare current local terms rather than a universal ranking.
